The website needs to be 110% July 16, 2010 Comments Off

So, I need to take this seriously… about twelve months ago I bought this domain name. I wanted something that summed-up what I do and what I like doing.

My personal rules for buying domain names are -

  • .com when it is a larger concern, or something that is “global” or certainly not geographically based
  • .co.uk (or your country of residence) if you offer a service, or have clients/customers who you plan to meet with.
  • .net and/or .org if they’re available, in addition to the .co.uk/.com to prevent competitors buying into your “space”
  • I don’t like domain names with obvious punctuation characters in them
  • I don’t like domain names with “double-letters” – like “greennews” where the “n” of green and “n” of news requires a double-take to read properly
  • The domain name needs to be as short as practical/possible

So, over the next few days, I will be trying to make this site “complete”.

The Value of Online – let the challenge commence Comments Off

Fired-up by a recent discussion, I am interested in the concept of having a web-presence, or digital-reputation. The “why” or reason for doing this is not fame or glory, but a mechanical interest in how this might be achieved, how you might measure your progress and an evaluation of the trends.

So, here are the facts (as I see them) which is the starting point -

  • I work in IT and have a technical background
  • I develop websites for people and advise on internet matters
  • Until recently I have not had a website

The “challenge” is to -

  • Develop a web-presence, for me.
  • Establish ways in which this can implemented
  • Measure the success of each of the developments & score my web-presence
  • Provide the best & most complete set of instructions available to allow others to try-out web techniques
